Bongai Shamwari Trust
Home of the Kindergarten, Junior School & Mavambo Women’s Cooperative with Montessori principle — Help Me to Do It Myself
Details
Founded by Christa Zeller in 1985, Bongai Shamwari Trust began as a small kindergarten project and has grown into a holistic community initiative in Mutare, Zimbabwe. Guided by the principle “Help me to do it myself,” the trust supports early childhood education, women’s empowerment, and youth creativity through its interconnected programs.
Kindergarten & Junior School – Chikanga, Mutare
A Montessori-inspired Early Childhood Centre and Junior School where children learn through play, discovery, and respect for self and others. The school blends practical skills, cultural education, and environmental awareness to nurture confident, capable learners who thrive in and beyond the classroom.
It strongly promotes the integration of children with disabilities, ensuring that all children learn, play, and grow together in an inclusive and supportive environment.
MAVAMBO Women’s Cooperative
The MAVAMBO Cooperative empowers local mothers to achieve economic independence through small-scale production—oyster-mushroom cultivation, peanut butter, homemade pasta, and dried herbs.
Its newest venture, MEAT MA SAUSAGE, brings artisanal food craftsmanship to the community. The women produce a variety of fresh sausages in German, Hungarian, and Russian flavours, along with Liver Pâté, and smoked sausages. This project not only provides new income opportunities but also builds professional skills and teamwork among the women.
MutARE Tales
MutARE Tales is a community arts initiative in Mutare, Manicaland, helping emerging creatives turn talent into sustainable practice through workshops, mentoring, and showcases across music, dance, film, poetry, and visual art. Revived in 2023, it centers community collaboration so young artists—especially from under‑resourced areas—can find audiences, build skills, and grow careers.
Kids & Art
Kids & Art is a monthly creative program for children aged 4 to 15, hosted at Ubuntu Backpacker in Mutare. Each month explores a new art theme—painting, sculpture, storytelling, or mixed media. Through community sponsorships, children from vulnerable backgrounds join peers from more privileged families, learning and creating together. The program builds inclusion, confidence, and joy, strengthening community ties through shared creativity.
